You don’t need any previous economics training to thrive in this program. You can finish this economics certificate in as little as one or two semesters and complete your economics certification online, with some in-person exams. At the end of the certificate, you’ll understand economics fundamentals and basic microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, and know more about different economics fields like monetary and international economics.

Who should take this Economics: Fundamentals certificate?

  • You don’t have any economics background and want to gain foundational knowledge to help your career
  • You’re a university graduate with a degree in another field but want to pursue graduate studies in economics or a related field

What will you learn while taking the Economics: Fundamentals certificate?

You’ll learn:

  • Basic microeconomics, including concepts of supply and demand, the theory of the firm, distribution of income, business behaviour and decision-making under various market conditions
  • Basic macroeconomics, including concepts of levels of national income, employment and prices, the business cycle, factors affecting economic growth, and international trade
  • Critical analysis of monetary and fiscal policies

Certificate Requirements

  • 2 required courses
  • 2 electives
  • Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 1.67+

If you plan to pursue the Certificate in Economics: Theory and Applications, you should select CECN 189, as it is a prerequisite for the program

Recommended:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent
    • With 6 Grade 12 U credits (including English or Mathematics)
    • Or With M credits

OR

  • Mature student status
