Transition Foundations Program

The Transition Foundations Program is a one to two-year, part-time program, designed to facilitate a pathway to post-secondary education for mature learners (21+). The program caters to learners who have the motivation, potential, and stability required to be successful in post-secondary education, but have educational gaps and/or lack the formal admissions requirements.

In a supportive environment, learners complete university-level degree-credit courses through The Chang School, subject to the same rigour of any other university course. The program is designed to teach foundational skills required to successfully complete a post-secondary degree. While attending two evening courses per week, learners receive targeted and comprehensive academic and non-academic support, including guidance in accessing campus resources, as needed.

Amanda Dias“Spanning the Gaps has transformed me as a person. It has given me the confidence to enrol in post-secondary education. The program has helped me prove to myself that I’m intelligent and capable. It has changed me on both a personal and academic level.”

Amanda Dias
Graduate, Bridges to Ryerson

The Transitions Foundations Program is geared toward those candidates who have the potential for success in post-secondary education, but also have educational gaps that have resulted in incomplete admissions requirements for traditional pathways into post-secondary studies. Candidates may have previously had negative educational experiences, resulting in being unable to complete high school, or have been away from formal education for several years. Upon successful completion of the Transition Foundations Program, learners will be awarded a recognition of completion from The Chang School of Continuing Education.

Learners who successfully complete the Transition Foundations Program may choose to apply to an undergraduate program at Ryerson University, take more continuing education courses, register for a certificate program through The Chang School, or apply to another post-secondary institution.

Time Commitment

Learners in the Transition Foundations Program should expect to commit two to three evenings per week for three to four semesters. Classes typically take place from 6:30 p.m.–9:30 p.m. An additional six to ten hours per week will be required for homework (including readings, assignments, research, and writing), and campus resource appointments.

University degree credit courses

CYSG 120, CYSG 130, and CYSG 140: Academic Success Foundations (Seminars)

Learners participate in three Academic Success Foundations seminars (one per term). These seminars are designed to support learners’ academic development by providing the tools required to become more effective, resourceful, and self-directed within a university setting.

In order to successfully complete the Transition Foundations Program, and to be eligible for admission into a selected Ryerson degree program, learners must have a minimum course grade of C+ for each term, and a passing grade in all three Academic Success Foundations courses.

Tuition for the Transition Foundations Program is approximately $825 per semester. Materials cost approximately $100 per semester. Please note that these prices are approximate and are subject to change.

Learners in the Transition Foundations Program require a minimum of one year (three semesters) to complete the program. Additional time may be required based on the learner’s English level and desired degree program.
